The statue on the west side of the Adilshah Palace (Old secretariat) of a man hypnotizing a woman which is located in a small square is that of Jose Custodio Faria (Abe Faria), a Goan priest from Candolim, He was born in Candolim in the year 1756. He was ordained in Rome and then moved to Paris. His research on hypnotism at Paris has earned him the title as the “Father of Hypnotism". He died in the year 1819, He published a seminal text on hypnosis "On the cause of lucid Sleep". This statue was erected on 20th September, 1945.
